The physical symptoms of menopause can be very challenging, and distressing changes can begin up to ten years before actual menopause. With all of the conflicting information about hormone therapy, you may feel confused and intimidated. Are hormones safe? Are some types of hormones safer than others? How do I know if hormone therapy is right for me? At Serenity Women’s Care, we take the time to listen to your concerns, to explore your individual health risks, and to help you make decisions that are right for you.
The symptoms of diminished hormones can occur at any age, though we typically associate these with women over the age of 35. Commonly reported, bothersome symptoms include hot flashes, night sweats, irritability and mood swings, fatigue and weight gain. Many women also complain of a “mental fogginess,” during these years, with a decreased sense of “sharpness” in her thinking, and less ability to focus on multiple responsibilities at once. Sexual symptoms may include profoundly decreased sexual interest, vaginal dryness, and pain with intercourse. All of these complaints can significantly diminish a woman’s quality of life. The good news is that, for most women, hormone therapy can really help!
At Serenity Women’s Care, hormone therapy begins with a very detailed consultation. We explore a woman’s symptoms, medical and family history, individual health risks, work and family life, stress levels, and her individual views on hormones, as well as her treatment goals. She may have a complete physical examination, if one has not been done recently, a Mammogram, and possibly a pelvic Ultrasound. Necessary blood tests are done at this time also. When all of the results are available, we sit down with each woman and review everything in detail, and develop a treatment plan which will be appropriate for her. We take into account her health, risk status, and her individual preferences and treatment goals.
Hormone therapy is never “one size fits all.” At Serenity, we prescribe both “bioidentical” and conventional hormones. We may use topical hormone creams or gels, oral pills, patches or lozenges under the tongue. We also provide therapy with hormone pellets implanted under the skin. We are not, however, a “pellet mill,” implanting pellets into anyone who will hand over their credit card! We are not in the business of trying to “sell” a woman any particular form of hormone therapy. Every treatment decision is hers and hers alone.
There are a number of hormones which may be part of a woman’s treatment plan. Among these are estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and thyroid hormone. Some women need particular supplements, such as DHEA or Vitamin D3. As part of your hormonal treatment at Serenity Women’s Care, you are educated about any possible side effects and monitored for any complications. If concerns arise, we address them promptly. Your safety is our number one priority.
Hormone therapy can be extremely beneficial for women, and really improve their quality of life. Contrary to what you may have seen or heard, however, it is not a “fountain of youth,” it won’t reverse aging, and it’s not risk-free. If you are having bothersome symptoms, and you wonder if it could be your hormones, come on in for a consultation. At Serenity Women’s Care, we can help you to see beyond both the hormone hype and the hormone hysteria, to find answers that work for you. Our goal is for you to feel your absolute best as you navigate through the middle years
